Discover Tokyo’s Street Food Tradition In London
If you are looking for the best in Japanese cuisine, you will soon discover that it is more exciting and varied than many people will realise, especially when you check out our menu here in Notting Hill.
Dishes like sushi are now very familiar in the West, but there are all sorts of foods and traditions that exist across Japan. Some of these are unknown to visitors when they first arrive, but a few evenings out can change all that.
A prime example of this is the thriving Tokyo street food scene. As might be expected for the biggest city in the world, it is very large and varied. But there are some recurrent themes and locations that have gained a particularly strong reputation for great things to eat.
There are plenty of guides to help you make a start. Tokyo Localized lists ten ‘must try’ foods, such as okonomiyaki, a savoury pancake with a difference. Like the batter in the British pancakes you would eat on Shrove Tuesday, it contains flour and eggs, but it also has extras like cabbage, seafood and pork belly to create a magical taste.
Another batter dish is Takoyaki, little fried balls with chopped up octopus, onions and fried ginger, while Gyoza is a type of fried dumpling with added meat and veg.
Live Japan offers an even longer list, with 15 things to try. Noodle fans should go for Yakisoba, with grilled pork and vegetables. If you prefer something without meat (which is usually seafood or pork), try corn on the cob - not with butter like you would see here, but with soy sauce and a sprinkling of salt.
For a sweeter taste, Amezaiku may appeal to anime fans, a hard candy formed into the shapes of animals like anime or Manga characters.
These are just some of the many dishes available on the Tokyo street food scene. But you don’t have to fly halfway across the world to try them. We have brought the taste of Japan to west London. Come and discover something new today.
